  1. By this mail, I am questioning the Quality Control standards of Harley Davidson from my personal experience.
My bike is three months old and it has been having recurring problems. The last three consecutive rides it has stalled and the third time yesterday, 29 Apr 2018, fire was spewing from both the exhausts. With the wind blowing they were reaching 3 to 4 feet high.
Had I not taken prompt action after the locals brought to my notice the fire on my rear, my life could have been endangered if my armoured poly jacket would have caught fire.

While the bike was being assessed by Tusker Harley Davidson, Indiranagar, Bangalore, India on 22 Apr 2018 another issue was brought to my notice by the Operations Head; the paint around the fuel cap was peeling off. Photos have been sent to Harley Davidson as told to me.

To my good fortune Mr Srinivas Reddy, one of the promoters of Tusker Harley Davidson, Bangalore, India was passing by when my bike had stalled yesterday, 29 Apr 2018. He could gauge the situation seeing my bike and having been told by the locals on the fire part. He assessed the situation and took immediate steps to assist me.

After having been told that a comprehensive check was done and there would be no issues, I went for my weekly HOG ride yesterday, 29 Apr 2018. During my onward journey, I was not getting a good feel of the bike. It was occasionally sputtering and not giving the smooth tuned up revving associated with the bike. During my return journey, I decided to go to my house in the suburbs and not the city one. Approximately 7 km form my house, my motorcycle started sputtering and I could gauge that it was the same heating problem. After a few 100 mtr, I looked for a place to park my bike and stopped it on the roadside. There were a few kiosks on the other side and I saw people frantically gesturing towards my bike and a couple of came running towards me and started pointing to the rear and talking in the local dialect which I could not follow. I turned back and saw fumes spewing through both the exhausts and with the breeze blowing, it was going up atleast 3 to 4 feet. Fortunately, I had the bike on the stand and the Ignition was switched off and thus I quickly jumped off. My first instinct was to douse the fire and asked the people to get some water. Once doused I started taking stock of the situation. You must appreciate that my armoured jacket made of a poly fibre material could have caught instant fire and endangered my life. The bike had done 231 km at that time.

    My bike details are:
1.Harley Davidson Fatboy, Velocity Red, 2017 Model
    2.Chasis No : MEG1BXVNXHN042645
    3.Engine No : BXVH042645
    4. Date of Registration 04 Jan 2018.

    My contentions are:

    1. My motorcycle, The Harley Davidson Fatboy, has a major Quality Control issue. Within three months it has faced multiple problems.

    2. I do not have the heart nor the will to ride this bike anymore. I cannot be taking out this bike fully well knowing that it is a risk and will make my rides stressful. The Indian sub continent is very difficult from the traffic management point of view and considering the temperature variations in our tropical country. I am sure Harley has taken care of this; if so why should an all weather cruising bike stall within 100 to 200 km of its running, repeatedly. I am a small framed man weighing 60 kg and will find it difficult to manoeuvre this bike in the city of Bangalore assuming such repeated quality issues.

    3. Paint peeling off from a new bike is something very rare and it has happened with this bike again.

    4. It is fortunate for Harley that yesterday’s incident did not happen in the city, had I decided to go to my city house. Imagine the publicity it would have fetched to Harley with photographs and reports every where.

    5. I do not want this motorcycle and I will leave it with Tusker. I want a full refund.

The official response from the office of the Managing Director, Harley, India is very indifferent as quoted from mail extract

I want a full refund or my bike changed at no cost.
